General analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Generally, the situation is similar to that of the prior month due to the high temperatures and moisture that still affect the Northern hemisphere<\/strong>, which promote the growth of Penicillium, Aspergillus<\/em> <\/strong>and Fusarium<\/em><\/strong>. These fungi cause digestive mycoses and produce mycotoxins (aflatoxins and ochratoxins), particularly Aspergillus <\/em>and Penicillium<\/em>. They also decrease feed quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Southern hemisphere<\/strong>, low temperatures lead to an increase in respiratory problems <\/strong>caused by virus. Some countries that import US grain have issues with deoxynivalenol (DON) <\/strong>contaminations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concern about the presence of mycotoxins in dairy feed increases, particularly of aflatoxin<\/strong>, since it poses a risk for human health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysis of geographic areas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This August of 2021, the following issues were described in poultry and pig farms in the different world areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Asia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In China <\/strong>and other Asian countries, pig farms <\/strong>remain affected by African Swine Fever (ASF)<\/strong> outbreaks that spread though the Northern area. There is an increasing interest to design and apply effective protocols to repopulate pig farms <\/strong>in a secure way after overcoming the outbreaks. This situation is similar in other areas, such as Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In poultry<\/strong>, there is concern about gut challenges <\/strong>such as E. coli <\/em>and necrotic enteritis, and also about other diseases like infectious toxic hepatoenteritis <\/strong>(HETI). In breeders, efforts focus on the control of zoonotic microorganisms like Salmonella <\/em><\/strong>and Campylobacter.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Russia and Ukraine<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fungal contamination <\/strong>in grain is high due to the environmental conditions affecting the area. Mycoses, such as the ones caused by Aspergillus<\/em><\/strong>, and mycotoxin <\/strong>issues are highly prevalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Problems derived from poor feed quality<\/strong> remain, particularly those related to corn, soy and sunflower products. There is shortage of qualified raw materials, which increases their price, particularly that of soybean meal.<\/strong> Therefore, many producers use rapeseed <\/strong>products as a temporary replacement. This leads to gastrointestinal disorders in birds and pigs, since rapeseed contains more antinutritional factors (ANFs)<\/strong>. Sunflower meal  is an issue, too, as it contains high fiber levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poultry farms <\/strong>remain affected by heat stress<\/strong> and suffer from cage fatigue syndrome and eggshell problems. The other reported issues in the area are secondary infections, respiratory disorders and adenovirus <\/strong>was isolated from sick birds in several farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Europe<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In poultry farms<\/strong>, high temperatures in the area keep causing heat stress<\/strong>, which leads to worse performance results, bone, and eggshell problems (in layers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned above, some farms from countries affected by ASF <\/strong>are looking for effective protocols to repopulate the farms in a secure way once they have recovered from the outbreak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00b7         Latin America<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Analyses of raw materials show that fumonisin <\/strong>and sesquiterpene mycotoxins<\/strong>, such as deoxynivalenol and 3-acetyl deoxynivalenol, are present in high concentrations in cereals like corn and can be harmful for animal health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pecking<\/strong> and oviduct prolapses <\/strong>related to excessive weight and fat levels are observed in breeders. Besides, there is evidence of ASF <\/strong>outbreaks in the Dominican Republic, near the Haiti\u2019s border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
