For these reasons, hens have high calcium requirements that need to be met, as much as possible, through the calcium present in the diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-dfdbb756-c12b-4333-8129-305b64b2325e\">Including the <strong>right amount of calcium in the diet <\/strong>will help to <strong>minimize <\/strong>the percentage of <strong>broken eggs and bone problems<\/strong>, which, consequently, will result in good performance rates and high-quality eggs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-3a38c236-5b26-4967-b478-f635bbd044fa\">Evolution of calcium requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-c6171569-db5b-4725-b724-b480163354c7\">Diets for pullets and laying hens should <strong>meet the requirements of each development stage<\/strong>. This means that the calcium inclusion in the feed needs to be adjusted to the feed intake and the current needs of the pullets and hens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Table 1. These requirements start increasing during the pre-laying period, when they are around 2.2%, and reach 3.8% at the start of egg production. As the laying period goes on, the recommended calcium levels increase above 4%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-70c40d3b-bea3-4c3f-8880-21523a95abd1\">Content of calcium in different sources<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0de48c58-b23a-4e1b-9aec-26994f062e4d\"><strong>The content and purity of calcium sources <\/strong>must be considered during feed formulation to adjust the levels of this mineral to the birds\u2019 requirements. The content and purity of the ingredients will have an impact on the final percentage of calcium available in the digestive tract, the one to be absorbed by the animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"block-47c912b3-0e75-4963-bf0c-ceade1dd5978\" class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.globalvetslab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/image-2.png\" alt=\"La imagen tiene un atributo ALT vac\u00edo; su nombre de archivo es image-2.png\"\/><figcaption>Sources: (Blas et al. 2019; Rostagno et al. 2017)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-daf53a6c-2d05-4291-8061-61d7de036014\">Particle size<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-80dcebcc-66e9-4dc6-a1f5-bafdb043b332\"><strong>Particle size of the calcium source <\/strong>needs to be considered, too, since it is <strong>related to the gut retention time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-b166a480-aaa2-4135-826c-034ff32525e4\">Longer gut retention periods in the digestive tract <strong>increase calcium utilization<\/strong>.
